Jubilee of Mercy
‘I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its centre the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (cf. lk 6:36).’

What are the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy?
Each month during the Jubilee, we will focus on different works of mercy. So what are these works of mercy? Click here to find out.
Feed the Hungry and Give Drink to the Thirsty
Feed the Hungry and Give Drink to the Thirsty: these are two Corporal Works of Mercy that we’ve all heard of. Pope Francis encourages us to embrace these works, “You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayer works.” He set the example by choosing to eat with and encourage the homeless of Washington DC when he visited the US in September after his address to congress, rather than dining with his congressional hosts. Jesus makes very clear how we can do this when he says “Amén, te digo, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Mateo 25:40.
Understanding what God asks of us, the question remains, how do we incorporate these works into our every day lives? St. Sabina parishioners are already doing this! Some volunteers help prepare and serve a meal at the Community Meals at Lord of Love church and Holy Family House once a month. Others prepare meals for Uplift and deliver those meals to our homeless brothers and sisters of Kansas City. Youth also help sort food and package weekend food bags for children living in poverty. There are also less obvious ways that we can feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty. Some of these include making donations to Catholic Relief Services & CRS Rice Bowls, Pan para el mundo, or other organizations that support the hungry and provide access to clean drinking water in third world countries, or supporting our annual bake sale that benefits the Community Meals. You can visit http://www.capuchinfranciscans.org/blog/corporal-works-of-mercy-give-drink-to-the-thirsty to learn about the importance of water and how conserving it could help those who don’t have access to clean water; take some time to research ways to conserve water and include them in your daily routine.
We have been blessed with so much, more than we need, let this Year of Mercy be a reminder to share these gifts!
Pray for the Living and the Dead
During this Year of Mercy we are offered a special opportunity to live out the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. One of the Spiritual Works of Mercy that we practice regularly at Mass is praying for the living and the dead. We do this each week when we come to Mass, but we can also continue this practice throughout the week by praying for those listed in our prayer list in our weekly bulletin. Another opportunity to remind us who is in need of our prayers is our weekly updates which can be emailed to parishioners each week. See our interactive prayer list here, and please remember to let them know you’re praying for them by clicking “I will pray.” By doing this, those is that are in special need of prayer our parish family can see the numbers of how many are praying for them… how uplifting!
