The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) produced sixteen documents that form the official teaching of the Church on a multitude of topics and issues. Pope John XXIII called the council to repair the breach between Christian churches and to update church teachings in a language and manner that spoke to the people of our age. The documents define the church as the entire people of God, a community called by baptism to full, conscious and active participation on all levels of the church’s life. Our baptismal call also demands an engagement with the whole human family, since we are all beloved members of God’s family. Baptism demands that put our God-given gifts at the service of the entire human family. Baptism is the basis of all ministry.
