This note is to inform you that one of our Manos Amigas members in Anapra passed away this week.
Sofia was one of the abuelas (grandmas) in our new Adopt an Abuela program.  She was also the grandmother of two students in our scholarship program.  Ezequel is a junior in high school in El Paso.  Rebeca just graduated from Elementary school.  Sofia had cancer and was bedridden for the last year.  Rebeca was her main caretaker until April when Cristina, Rebeca’s mother quit her job so she could care for Sofia full time.

The care and support of Sofia is a story of collaboration on both sides of the border.  Donors in Kansas City have been paying Cristina’s salary. Donors in El Paso have been paying medical insurance.  A former Manos Amigas scholarship student who is now a nurse has been providing in home care.  Manos Amigas families in Anapra visited Sofia, ran errands for Cristina, and provided moral support.

God’s love and care surrounded this family in Sofia’s final days.  We are honored and humbled to be part of her story.
Manos Amigas along with a church in Anapra are paying the funeral and cremation expenses.  We pledged 7400 pesos (about $500).  If you would like to contribute to Sofia’s final expenses, you can send a check to:
